John Stewart mixes old with new in Atherton
His clients’ collection of Blanc de Chine porcelains set the tone for John Stewart’s design of a sprawling Atherton estate. Built in 1927, the 6,910 square foot Normandy style home sits on a 3.45-acre lot and includes five bedrooms with five and a half baths. In the living room, a French Aubusson rug grounds pale overstuffed upholstery. The designer selected a rich cherry wood coffee table and bronze Giacometti styled floor lamp to contrast with the light color palette. Echoing the original twenties window treatment, Stewart installed a shaped valance in ecru fabric with cream trim flanked by pleated curtains. He continued the dramatic drapery in the formal dining room where he mixed traditional furnishings and modern art. Rose Tarlow’s classic walnut Regency Dining Table and white wheel back chairs share space with a vivid Abstract Expressionist painting by Tom Holland. Away from the public rooms, an intimate wood paneled library features ivory textiles punctuated by accents of vermilion red.
